Massachusetts native Sean Hanrahan enters his 15th year as an employee within the Athletics Department at The Apprentice School. He has served the department in various capacities including Athletic Trainer, Academic Coordinator, and most recently as Interim Athletic Director. 

Hanrahan joined the Builders from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he served as an Athletic Trainer. During his tenure at MIT, Hanrahan served as an Approved Clinical Instructor for Boston University, as well as an Adjunct Instructor teaching Rehabilitation of Athletic Injuries to athletic training students within Sargent College. MIT participated in a site visit held by the Collegiate Sports Medicine Foundation, where Hanrahan assisted in a move to the MIT Student Health Department, as well as the development of a practice calendar for one of the most robust sports programs in Division III intercollegiate athletics. 

Prior to that Hanrahan served four years as the Athletic Trainer at Mount Ida College in Newton, Massachusetts, coordinating the healthcare management of 11 intercollegiate programs. He served as an Approved Clinical Instructor for Boston University, and an Adjunct Faculty Professor at Mount Ida College teaching Care and Prevention of Athletic Injuries, Cardiovascular Fitness, and Concepts in Health Management. During his time at Mount Ida, Hanrahan became a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association and began working as a Strength Coach with individual collegiate athletes, as well as personal clients at the Boston City Sports Clubs. 

Hanrahan earned his bachelor degree in Athletic Training from Boston University in 2001 while gaining experience with current Olympic and future NHL athletes competing with the BU Men’s Ice Hockey program. Hanrahan was also a seasonal Athletic Training Student interning with the New England Patriots during the 2000 NFL season, where he was assigned to the defensive line during rookie camps, mini-camps, preseason camp and games, as well as seasonal home games. During his time at BU, Hanrahan focused his thesis on Manual Therapy at the Lumbar Spine, and was named the Outstanding Athletic Training Student in his class upon graduation. 

Hanrahan earned his Master’s degree in Athletic Training Education from Old Dominion University, and worked as a Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer at Christopher Newport University. Hanrahan continued to research his interest in manual techniques at the low back region, and received the Kenneth L. Knight Award for Outstanding Research Manuscript for his original research published in The Journal of Athletic Training. He presented his joint mobilization research at both the National Athletic Training Association Symposium, and the Mid-Atlantic Athletic Training Association Symposium. Hanrahan also presented on Elbow Injuries in the Collegiate Baseball Pitcher at the National Athletic Training Association Symposium. While working at CNU, he served as an athletic trainer for the university’s inaugural football seasons, and was part of the baseball program that finished second and third in the NCAA Division III College World Series. During the summer of 2002, Hanrahan worked in the Cape Cod Baseball League as the Athletic Trainer for the Harwich Mariners while caring for multiple future MLB players. He was a Teaching Assistant at ODU for Advanced Orthopedic Evaluation and Assessment, as well as Anatomical Kinesiology and Human Anatomy. Upon completion of his studies at ODU, Hanrahan was tapped with the Graduate Award for Academic Excellence in Athletic Training. 

Since starting at The Apprentice School, he has served as a Clinical Preceptor for ODU in both the Graduate Athletic Training Program, as well as entry level Master of Science in Athletic Training Program. Hanrahan was also an Adjunct Instructor teaching Lower Extremity Injury Management Strategies and The Spine: Evaluation and Rehabilitation at ODU. Prior to the 2012 Olympics in London, he worked with Olympic athletes tapped for competition in US Wrestling, US Men’s Gymnastics, and US Men’s Figure Skating while on a assignment in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Hanrahan has also obtained his Level 1 Certification with Precision Nutrition and was published in The Athletic Training Education Journal.
