HAMPTON, VA. - The Apprentice School closed out the first round of the 2008 USCAA National Championships by knocking off Lyndon State College 4-2 on Tuesday night at War Memorial Stadium in Hampton.
Apprentice School now faces Robert Morris-Springfield in a semifinal matchup while Lyndon State will face Penn State Beaver in a 11 am elimination game.
The Builders scored a pair of runs in the fourth inning as Kenny Eanes drove in one with a fielders choice and the other scored on a double steal as Alan Riley stole home. Apprentice School added a run in the fifth as J.D.Drewry had a one-out single, advanced on a passed ball and scored on a RBI single from Kyle Center.
Lyndon State scored a run in the fifth as Adrian Guyer started the inning with a single and advanced to second on an error. He scored on a RBI single from Matt Lapham to cut the deficit to 3-1.
Apprentice School added a run in the seventh as James Denny singled, advanced on a sacrifice and stole third before a Center sacrifice fly gave the Builders a 4-1 lead. The Hornets responded in their half of the inning scoring a run as Rob Malloy reached on a fielders choice scoring Lapham.
Center drove in a pair of runs as six Builders had a hit each. Joe Tugwell earned the win throwing five innings and allowing four hits and one unearned run.
