Baseball Sweeps Castleton State 16-1 And 8-3

HAMPTON, VA. – The Apprentice School baseball team dodged oncoming rain on Friday and swept a doubleheader from visiting Castleton State College (Vt.) 16-1 and 8-3 at War Memorial Stadium.

In game one, the Builders jumped quickly scoring a pair of runs in the first inning as one scored on an error and one on a fielders choice by Andrew Yonta .  In the second, Ryan Wagner singled in a run and Josh Tuck drove in another on a ground out as the Builders took a 4-0 advantage.

After scoring three runs in the fourth, the Builders broke it wide open with an eight-run fifth inning.  Jonathan Dehoux, Jared Belcher and Chris Kennedy each drove in a pair of runs to highlight the inning as the Builders took a 15-0 lead after five innings.  Yonta drove in the final run of the game for the Builders with a single in the sixth.

Tuck and Yonta each drove in three runs, while Dehoux, Fields, Kennedy and Belcher drove in a pair for the Apprentice School.  Yonta, Fields and Belcher had a pair of hits each for the Builders who had 11 in the contest.

Tabb Griffey earned his first victory on the year throwing eight innings and allowing five hits and struck out four. 

In game two, Ethan Halberg picked up his fifth victory on the year as the Builders trailed 1-0 after three innings before the bats came to life.  Josh Wilson’s two-run single highlighted a three-run fourth inning to put the Builders up 3-1.  In the sixth, Wilson’s groundout plated Dory Fields with a run for a 4-1 lead. 

Castleton State pushed a couple runs across in the top of the eighth as Coire Barnitz relieved Halberg and struck out the last two batters to close out the threat.  In the bottom of the eighth, the Builders pushed four runs across with two coming on a Wagner single and a third on a single from Dehoux.

The Builders out-hit Castleton State 12-8 with Dehoux leading the way going 3-for-5, while Wilson, Tuck and Andrew Hooper had a pair of hits each.

On Saturday, the Builders will take on Penn State Fayette at noon, while Fayette will face Castleton State at 10 am to finish their game from Friday night which was stopped after three innings due to rain.
