Nine-Run Sixth Lifts Builders To 16-5 Win Over Fulton-Montgomery

HAMPTON, VA. -- The Apprentice School closed out a three-game series with Fulton-Montgomery CC with a 16-5 win on Tuesday evening at War Memorial Stadium.

Fulton-Montgomery opened the game scoring four runs in the first inning as Ronnie Cruz singled in a pair and Mario Cunningham doubled in a run with the fourth scoring on an error. 

The Raiders held Apprentice School scoreless in the first, but the Builders chipped away with a run in the second and third before plating four in the fourth.  After scoring one on a wild pitch, Ryan Wagner doubled in a pair and Jonathan Dehoux singled in a run to take a 6-4 lead after four.

Fulton-Montgomery scored another run in the fifth as Cunningham hit his second RBI double of the game to cut the lead to 6-5.  The Builders answered with one in its half of the fifth as Wagner drew a bases-loaded walk to plate Chris Kennedy for a 7-5 lead.

In the sixth, the Builders erupted for nine runs as they benefitted from three Raider errors.  Senior Dory Fields closed out the scoring with a three-run home run to right field for the final of 16-5.

Kennedy was 2-for-4 with four runs scored, while Andrew Hooper was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI for the Apprentice School (15-5).  Tabb Griffey earned his third win throwing five innings and allowing eight hits and striking out three.  Coire Barnitz threw the last two innings and struck out four to earn his second save.

The Builders will now travel on Friday to Elizabeth City, NC to take on the Vikings in a 3 pm single game.
