Baseball Hits 20-Win Mark With 15-10 Win Over Thomas Nelson

HAMPTON, VA. -- Freshman Devorn Lake smashed his third home run on the season and senior Dory Fields went 3-for-4 with three RBIs as the Apprentice School defeated Thomas Nelson CC 15-10 on Tuesday evening.

The Builders trailed 6-0 after the top of the second as the Gators plated a pair in the first and four in the second, highlighted by a two-run single from David Wedding.  In the bottom of the second, the Builders brought up 13 men to the plate and scored nine runs.  Fields had a pair of hits in the inning, his second one was a two-run double to highlight the outburst and put the Builders up 7-6 at that point.

Apprentice School (20-13) pushed the lead to 11-6 in the bottom of the fourth as Lake smashed his thrd home run on the year to left field to score Chris Kennedy who started the inning with a single. 

Thomas Nelson scored three in the top of the fifth to cut the deficit to 11-9 as two of those came in on a Hunter Nicholson single.  The Builders scored four in their half of the fifth as Fields drove in Josh Tuck who started the inning with a single.  Two runs later scored on an error and Kennedy singled in a run for a 15-9 lead.

The Gators pushed a run across in the sixth on a Thomas Crespo single for the eventual final score of 15-10.

Fields' three hits, his 20th multi-hit game of the year, helped lead an 11-hit attack for the Builders.  Lake, Kennedy and Jonathan Dehoux added a pair of hits each.  Lake and Fields drove in three runs each, while Kennedy scored four runs courtesy of earning a pair of walks with his 2-for-2 performance.

Will Miller picked up his first win on the season throwing 2.1 innings of four-hit relief of starter Mike Opauski.

The Builders will close out the home schedule on Thursday with Senior Day as they face Rappahannock CC at 4 pm at War Memorial Stadium.  Apprentice School (20-13) hit the 20-win mark for the 13th time in the last 14 years.

Note: The schedule for next weekend has been altered for the Builders.  They'll face Briarcliffe College in Holbrook, NY at 3:30 pm on Thursday, April 29 and then will play a split-doubleheader on May 1 at PAL Complex.  On that Saturday, they'll face St. Joseph's-Brooklyn at 10 am and will take on Briarcliffe College approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of that game.
