Baseball Smashes Way To 18-10 Win Over Rappahannock

HAMPTON, VA. – Senior Will Johnson celebrated Senior Day in style going 5-for-6 with six RBIs as the Apprentice School outslugged Rappahannock CC 18-10 at War Memorial Stadium on Thursday night.

Johnson started his hitting onslaught with a two-run double to highlight a four-run first inning.  After giving up a run in the top of the second, the Builders answered with a pair of runs as Ryan Wagner doubled in a run and later scored on a wild pitch for a 6-1 lead.

In the third, Johnson singled and later scored on a balk as the Builders put up three runs for a 9-1 lead.  He drove in his third run on the night with a single off the pitcher in the fourth inning as the Builders took an 11-1 lead.

Rappahannock scored five runs in the top of the fifth before the Builders answered with three more keyed by a two-run single from Johnson to score Chris Kennedy who earlier drove in a run with a single and Devorn Lake to take a 14-6 lead.

After giving up a pair of runs in the top of the sixth, Jonathan Dehoux drove in Josh Tuck with a double to put the Builders up 15-8.  Rappahannock answered with a pair of runs in the top of the eighth before the builders put up three more as Tuck started with a single and scored on a Dehoux triple.  Lake brought in Dehoux with a single and scored as Johnson drove in his sixth and final run on the night with a single to right field for the 18-10 advantage.

Johnson's five hits matched the school record now shared by seven other players.  Dehoux was 3-for-6 with three RBIs and three runs scored, while Tuck and Chris Scarola also had three hits each as the Builders went over 20 hits in a game for the third time this year. Tabb Griffey earned his fifth win on the season throwing 1.2 innings of relief of starter Ethan Halberg.

Apprentice School (21-13) now will travel to Holbrook, NY on Thursday, April 29 to face Briarcliffe College in a battle of the top-two ranked teams in the US Collegiate Athletic Association at 3:30 pm.
