Tim Kehoe No-Hitter Lifts Builders Over Penn State Greater Allegheny 6-2; Fall 10-8 To Cincinnati-Clermont In Nightcap

OLD ORCHARD BEACH, ME. -- Senior Tim Kehoe threw the first no-hitter by a Builder since April 4, 2004 as the Apprentice School knocked off Penn State Greater Allegheny 6-2 in the USCAA Nationals in Old Orchard Beach, Maine.

Kehoe, a senior from Williamsburg, Va., threw 85 pitches in his no-hitter.  The first inning was the inning that the Nittany Lions plated a pair of runs.  Kehoe started the game striking out the first two looking, but then lost a bit of control as he walked the next one and hit the next two batters to load the bases.  A groundball to shortstop deflected into center field to score both runs giving the Nittany Lions a 2-0 advantage.

Penn State from there only managed a pair of walks, one in the second that was erased on a force out and one in the third that was erased on a double play.  From there, Kehoe kept the Lions at bay.

That lead held until the fourth inning when Jonathan Dehoux started with a single and Dory Fields smashed a two-run home run to left field to tie the game 2-2.  An inning later, the Builders broke it open with three runs.  With one out, Ryan Wagner and Josh Tuck singled before scoring on a three-run shot to right field by Fields.  He became the second Builder with a pair of home runs in a national tournament game since Dehoux did the feat in the 2008 nationals.

In the sixth, Apprentice School scored another as Tuck singled in Jared Belcher with two outs for a 6-2 lead.

Kehoe closed the no-hitter Inducing a groundout from Matt Bradburn to give the Builders their first no-hitter since April 4, 2004 when Travis Cobb and Kellyn Johnson each threw one in a doubleheader sweep of Maine-Presque Isle.

Wagner, Tuck and Fields had two hits apiece for the Builders as they had nine for the game.  Kehoe struck out eight and walked three in the game for his second win of the year.

Cincinnati-Clermont 10, Apprentice School 8

In the nightcap, the Builders fell short in a comeback attempt in losing 10-8 to University of Cincinnati-Clermont for fourth place in the ten-team event.

Clermont scored a run in the first but the Builders answered with a pair as Andrew Yonta drew a bases loaded walk and Chris Kennedy drove in one on a flyball.

The Cougars put up two in the second and hit for four runs in the third with two coming on a Zach Barkalow double.  Apprentice School answered with a pair of runs on RBI singles from Yonta and Kennedy cutting the deficit to 7-5.

The Builders scored a run in the fourth in a fielders choice by Dehoux to plate Andrew Hooper who started the inning with a single.  After giving up three in the top of the fifth, the Builders scored one on a Hooper infield single to plate Kennedy.  In the sixth they scored as Dehoux crossed the plate courtesy of a wild pitch.

The final inning saw Dehoux score Ryan Wagner with a RBI single to right-centerfield for the eventual 10-8 final.

Dehoux was 3-for-5 with three runs and two RBIs on the game, while Wagner, Yonta and Hooper had a pair of hits each for the Builders who finished 26-15.  For his career, Dehoux ended as the first Builder in the last 21 years to have a .400 career batting average.
