Baseball Loses 12-8 In 10 Innings To NCAA D2 National Power Kutztown

HAMPTON, VA. – Shayne Houck hit a grand slam home run to highlight a five-run tenth inning for Kutztown University as they held of the Apprentice School 12-8 in day two of the 2011 Builder Invitational at War Memorial Stadium on Friday.

The Golden Bears opened the scoring with four runs highlighted by a three-run home run from Houck to left field.  Apprentice School answered with four of its own in the bottom of the first inning as Devorn Lake drove in three runs with a home run to left field.  Andrew Yonta followed with a single and advanced on a wild pitch before a Corey Gallaway single scored him to tie the game.

Kutztown, who entered the tournament ranked fifth in a pair of NCAA Division II polls, put two more across in its half of the third as Tyler Rubendall scored James Quigley with a sacrifice fly to start.  Brad Stoudt followed with a bunt single to score Mike Dugan who had doubled to go up 6-4.

Apprentice School answered with a pair in the third as Lake hit his second home run of the game to left field and Chris Scarola singled to center to score Yonta to even it up at 6-all.  The Builders scratched a run across in the sixth as Lake struck out but the ball got past the catcher to allow Josh Tuck to score and go up 7-6.

Kutztown followed suit with a run in its half of the seventh as Quigley doubled and scored on an error.  They put the game out of reach with the five-run tenth inning as Rubendall scored on an error and Houck smashed his second home run of the game to left field putting the guests ahead 12-7.

The Builders did scratch a run across in the tenth as Ryan Wagner scored on a wild pitch but could not do any more damage.

Yonta was 4-for-5 on the day with a pair of runs scored to lead the Builders, while Lake was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and four RBIs.  Gallaway was 3-for-5 as well as the Builders out-hit Kutztown 12-11.  Wagner tied a school record being hit by a pitch three times in the game.  Coire Barnitz took the loss throwing the last four innings and allowing five runs.

Apprentice School will play a doubleheader on Saturday in the tournament as they'll face Briarcliffe at noon and Lock Haven University at 3 pm.
