HAMPTON, VA. – The Apprentice School baseball team split a pair of games on Saturday in the Builder Invitational at War Memorial Stadium. In the opener they used a pair of six-run innings to knock off Briarcliffe College 16-3 and then lost to Lock Haven University 11-4 in the nightcap.
With those results, the Builders finished fourth in the round-robin portion of the tournament and will face Briarcliffe at 9 am on Sunday. A win there will put them in the noon game against Bloomsburg.
Against Briarcliffe, the Builders jumped on starter Chris McCabe quickly scoring three runs in the first inning as Devorn Lake drove in a pair with a triple and Kevin Sias singled in the other. After giving up a run in the bottom of the first the Builders scored another run in the second on a throwing error to lead 4-1.
The first six-run inning came in the fifth as Chris Aldridge drove in three of those with a bases-clearing double. They matched that with another six-spot in the seventh highlighted by a two-run double from Josh Tuck.
Chad Gurganus earned the win with two innings of two-hit relief. Six Builders had a pair of hits each while Lake and Aldridge drove in three runs each.
In the nightcap with Lock Haven another six-run inning was the difference but this was by the Bald Eagles. Each team scored a run in the first two innings before Lock Haven erupted for its six-spot in the third inning.
Ryan Wagner and Andrew Yonta had a pair of hits in the game while Wagner drove in two of the four runs.
