HAMPTON, VA. -- The Apprentice School baseball team opened a homestand on Friday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep of Penn State Beaver at War Memorial Stadium taking the opener 4-2 and winning the nightcap 12-0 to raise their record to 10-5 on the year.
In the opener, the Builders scored a run in the third as Ryan Wagner was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a throwing error and to third on a groundout before scoring on a Josh Tuck single to left.
After giving up a pair in the top of the fourth, the Builders scored three times in the bottom of the sixth with two outs. Chris Kennedy and Tuck singled before Andrew Hooper's single to center scored Kennedy with the tying run. Corey Gallaway singled in Tuck to give the Builders a 3-2 lead. Chris Aldridge followed with a single to score Hooper for the 4-2 lead.
Lutz struck out four of the final six batters he faced to earn the win as he struck out a season-high eight batters and allowed three hits for his second win in three decisions. Tuck was 3-for-4 with a RBI to lead the eight-hit attack for the Builders in game one.
In the nightcap, the Builders struck quickly for three runs in the first scoring a run on an error, a Gallaway sacrifice fly scored Kennedy who had singled and a RBI single from Aldridge to plate Tuck for a 3-0 lead.
They pushed it to 5-0 in the third as Gallaway tripled in Hooper who reached on an error and he scored on a groundout by Aldridge. In the fifth, the Builders erupted for five runs as Tuck cleared the bases with a single, Kennedy was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Gallaway doubled to score a run for a 10-0 lead.
Jared Belcher started the sixth with a solo home run to left and the final run came in on a Trevin Wilson single up the middle to score Gallaway who had followed Belcher's home run with a single for the 12-0 lead.
Tabb Griffey picked up the win throwing six innings and striking out a pair while allowing three hits. Chris Perry pitched the ninth and allowed one hit while striking out two. Gallaway was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and three runs driven in, while Aldridge was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs to lead the Builders in a 14-hit attack for game two.
Apprentice School takes the field again on Saturday for another doubleheader with St. Vincent's College starting at 1 pm at War Memorial Stadium.
