HAMPTON, VA. – The Apprentice School baseball team broke out the big sticks on Monday and swept a doubleheader from Fulton-Montgomery Community College winning 22-3 and 11-5 at War Memorial Stadium.
In game one, junior Daniel Lutz flirted with perfection as he carried a perfect game until two outs in the sixth inning when Brock Jordan drew a walk. The no-hitter was snapped on the next batter when Justin Andujar singled up the middle. Lutz struck out eight and earned his fourth win of the year with 5.2 innings of work.
Freshman Chris Aldridge was 3-for-4 with four runs scored, while senior Andrew Yonta was 2-for-4 with four runs scored and a career-high six RBIs. Four of those came in the sixth inning when he smashed a grand slam home run to highlight a six-run sixth. Freshman Chris Perry was 2-for-3 with three runs scored, a pair of doubles and three RBIs as well.
The Builders broke the game wide open scoring 12 runs in the third inning as Perry had his doubles in the inning to score three runs, while senior Ryan Wagner singled in a pair.
In game two, the Builders scored four runs in the first as Perry had another double to drive in a pair, while freshman Zachary Harding and sophomore Devorn Lake singled in a run each. In the second they plated three more behind a RBI ground out, a run-scoring double from Yonta and a sacrifice fly from Lake.
After giving up three in the fourth and two in the fifth, the Builders answered with a run in the fifth as Harding scored on a balk. In the sixth, the Builders scored three as Lake hit another sacrifice fly to score freshman Corey Gallaway who opened with a triple. Yonta scored on a wild pitch and freshman Josh Ammons ground out plated Perry.
Aldridge, Andrew Hooper, Lake and Chris Scarola all had two hits in the game for the Builders as Tabb Griffey won his fourth decision of the year throwing four innings and allowing five hits. Lake drove in three runs, while Perry added two RBIs.
These teams will close out the three-game series on Tuesday with a 5 pm start time at War Memorial Stadium on USO Day.
