Baseball Falls 4-1 At #2 Christopher Newport

NEWPORT NEWS, VA. – A three-run fifth inning for homestanding Christopher Newport University proved to be the difference as the Captains defeated the Apprentice School 4-1 on a dreary Friday afternoon at Captains Field.

The Builders scored their run in the second inning as with one out Chris Aldridge singled and stole second before scoring as Andrew Hooper's grounder hopped under the glove of the second baseman.

CNU, who entered the game ranked second in NCAA Division III, scored three times in the fifth inning with two coming on a Luke Saunders triple and a RBI double from Connor Madden.  The Captains scored another run in the sixth as Madden hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Steven Keender who earlier doubled and advanced on a wild pitch.

Daniel Lutz took the loss for the Builders throwing 5.1 inning and allowing five hits while walking three and striking out three.  Corey Gallaway pitched the final 2.2 innings allowing one hit while striking out two and walking two. 

Apprentice School outhit CNU 8-6 as four Builders had a pair of hits each in Chris Kennedy, Josh Tuck, Chris Perry and Aldridge.  Keener and Madden had a pair of hits to lead the Captains.

The Builders return to War Memorial Stadium on Monday for a 5 pm game with USCAA and NCAA Division II rival Washington Adventist University.  Apprentice School and CNU will play again at War Memorial Stadium on April 20 in a 4 pm start.
