ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. -- Sophomore Devorn Lake went 4-for-4 with five RBIs on a pair of home runs as the Apprentice School broke out of an offensive slump with a 20-1 win over College of The Albemarle on Wednesday at Knobbs Creek Park.
The Builders jumped out quickly scoring five runs in the first inning as seven of the first eight batters had hits. Ryan Wagner hit his first home run to bring in Josh Tuck who started the game with a double, while Andrew Yonta doubled in Corey Gallaway and Chris Perry to make it 5-0.
In the second inning Gallaway doubled in Chris Aldridge and Wagner to take a 7-0 lead. The next inning the Builders put up eight runs as Lake hit his first home run which was a grand slam to cap off the outburst. Wagner singled up the middle to score Lake who started the inning with a single and Chris Scarola who walked to start the inning. Aldridge and Gallaway had RBI singles in the middle before Lake hit his first blast to right-center.
The Dolphins scored in the third inning as Robert Jacot started being hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a Tyler Barrington doubled before scoring on a sacrifice fly from Matt Ittner. That proved to be the only serious threat for Daniel Lutz on the day as the Builder junior allowed three hits and struck out three for his fifth win.
After holding the Builders scoreless in the fourth, they put up another five-spot in the fifth inning as Lake started with a solo home run to left-center. That marked his second two-home run game of the year as he pulled that feat against Kutztown in the Builder Invitational back on February 18. A pair of two-run doubles from Jared Belcher and Andrew Hooper closed out the scoring in the 20-1 game that ended after five innings due to the 10-run rule.
Along with Lake's five RBI day, the Builders had four RBIs from Wagner who went 2-for-2 with three runs scored, three RBIs from Gallaway who was 3-for-3 and a pair of RBIs from Belcher, Hooper and Yonta.
The Builders will take the field again on Thursday afternoon as they face Virginia Wesleyan College in a 4 pm start at War Memorial Stadium.
BUILDERS FOURTH IN LATEST USCAA POLL
The latest USCAA Coaches Poll was released on Tuesday afternoon and the Builders dropped one slot to fourth. Southern Virginia University still leads the poll, followed by University of Dallas and Talladega College.
