HAMPTON, VA. – Sophomore Devorn Lake went 3-for-3 with a pair of runs driven in and the tandem of Daniel Lutz and Michael Adams combined on a seven-hit shutout as Apprentice School defeated Rappahannock CC 9-0 on Wednesday afternoon.
Apprentice School scratched a run in the second Chris Aldridge singled and advanced to second as Chris Perry was hit by a pitch. Following a double play, Lake doubled to left center to plate Aldridge for the 1-0 lead. In the next inning for the Builders, Josh Tuck doubled down the left field line and advanced to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a sacrifice fly from Ryan Wagner to lead 2-0.
The Builders put two more across in the fourth on a two-run double from Corey Gallaway to score Andrew Yonta and Lake. In the sixth, Tuck doubled to left center scoring Chris Scarola and Gallaway to take a 6-0 lead.
Following a 55-minute rain delay just into the bottom of the seventh, the Builders slid three runs across with a pair coming on a two-run double from Yonta to score Aldridge and Kennedy who singled before the rain struck. Lake followed with a sacrifice fly to score Perry who walked once the rain delay ended for the 9-0 advantage.
Lutz threw the first seven innings to pick up his sixth win on the year and allowed seven hits while striking out seven. He retired 10 batters in a row at one stretch before giving up a single in the seventh inning. Adams came in to throw the last two innings and kept the Gulls off base.
Joining Lake in the multi-hit club were Tuck, Kennedy and Aldridge all with two hits apiece. Tuck, Yonta, Lake and Gallaway all drove in a pair of runs each as the Builders raised their record to 22-13 on the year.
Next up for the team will be a home game on May 2 at 5 pm against Washington Adventist University at War Memorial Stadium.
USCAA RANKINGS – BUILDERS MOVE UP TO #2
The latest USCAA Coaches Top 20 was released late Wednesday afternoon and the Builders moved up two spots to #2 in the poll.
Apprentice School (22-13), who was fourth last week, now only trails Southern Virginia (28-6) in the rankings heading into selections for the 2011 USCAA Small College World Series starting on May 13 in Old Orchard Beach, Maine.
