OLD ORCHARD BEACH, MAINE – The Apprentice School baseball team had two players recognized at the pre-tournament banquet as USCAA All-American teams and two more named to the All-Academic teams on Friday afternoon.
Senior Josh Tuck was named to the first team All-American list for his stellar season at shortstop. A coating specialist apprentice from Richmond, hit .400 in the regular season and leads the team in hits (58), doubles (17), slugging percentage (.559) and is second in on-base percentage (.473), stolen bases (8). He had 18 multi-hit games and seven multi-RBI games while producing an 11-game hitting streak during the year.
Junior Daniel Lutz was named to the USCAA Honorable Mention All-American list as he finished the season with a 6-4 record and a 3.84 ERA. An outside machinist apprentice from Gloucester, he topped the team in innings pitched (72.2), strikeouts (67) and wins.
Two others were named to the USCAA All-Academic team. To be recognized, you must have a 3.5 grade point average or higher and at least a sophomore. Senior Andrew Yonta and sophomore Chris Scarola were recognized for their outstanding effort in the classroom, workplace and on the field.
The 2011 USCAA National Championships – the Small College World Series – begins on Saturday with now six games at The Ballpark in Old Orchard Beach. With a forecast of potential rain most of Sunday, the scheduled has been altered for the first two days. Apprentice School will now take the field at 4 pm on Saturday as the third-seeded Builders face sixth-seeded Selma University of Selma, Alabama.
