HAMPTON, VA. – The Apprentice School baseball team finished the 18th annual Builder Invitational in third place on Sunday as they knocked off Lock Haven University 6-4 at War Memorial Stadium.
After giving up a run in the top of the second, Apprentice School responded with a pair in the bottom of the second on a two-run single from Zach Harding to score Andrew Hooper and Ryan Hendrickson who had singled and was hit by a pitch respectively.
In the home half of the fourth, the Builders scored two more as Chris Scarola drove in Hooper on a fielders choice and on the play an errant throw allowed Chris Perry to score for a 4-1 lead.
Lock Haven answered with a pair of runs in the fifth and tied the game in the sixth on a single from Dakota Roof to score Brian Zyssett who had earlier doubled.
The Builders put their final two runs across in the eighth as the Builders loaded the bases to start. Hading singled and following a strikeout and a stolen base by pinch-runner Justin Hike, a pair of walks to Chris Aldridge and Trevin Wilson loaded the bases before Travis Franklin drove in one with a force out. Matt Zapf followed with a sacrifice fly to score Aldridge with the insurance run.
Perry picked up the win throwing the final two innings with one strikeout. The Builders had a pair of hits from Hooper and Harding to lead at the plate. With the win, head coach Bryan Cave is now three wins away from 500 for his career.
Apprentice School now hits the field again on Wednesday to face College of the Albemarle in a 3 pm start at War Memorial Stadium.
