VERO BEACH, FLA. -- The Apprentice School baseball team opened its three-day weekend in Vero Beach, Fla. on Friday by losing a doubleheader to Hagerstown CC 10-5 and 7-4 at Vero Beach Sports Village.
In game one, the Hawks jumped out quickly scoring four runs in the first inning with two of those coming in on a single by Chris Kulik. The Builders chipped away scoring a run in the third as with one out Trevin Wilson singled and advanced to third on an errant forceout throw. Devorn Lake then drove him in on a fielders choice.
Apprentice School pushed four across in the fourth to take a 5-4 lead as Chris Aldridge doubled in a pair, while Wilson and Travis Franklin each had a RBI single in the inning. Hagerstown tied it in the fifth on a one-out triple by Dylan Dunn and broke the game open with a five-run seventh to take the 10-5 win.
Wilson, Franklin and Ryan Hendrickson had two hits each for the Builders, as Daniel Lutz took the loss throwing 6.1 innings.
The second game saw no one crack the scoreboard until the top of the fifth as the Builders pushed a pair of runs across. Franklin started with a single and following a strikeout advanced to third as Andrew Hooper reached on a throwing error and took second on the play. After a groundout, Chris Perry plated them both with a single up the middle.
Hagerstown answered with a pair in the bottom of the fifth, but the Builders responded with two more in the top of the sixth. Chris Scarola started the inning being hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Aldridge. Following a groundout, walk and another hit batter, Hooper pushed a single through the left side to score Scarola and Franklin to put the Builders up 4-2.
But as in game one, the Hawks erupted in the sixth inning scoring five runs with the key blow being a two-run double from Jacob Kenney which put them up 5-4 at the time.
Hooper was the leading hitter in the game going 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI to lead the Builders at the plate. Aldridge took the loss in relief to drop to 0-1 on the year.
Apprentice School now takes the field again on Saturday morning at 10 am against NCAA Division III Northwestern College (Minn.) and then face Bridgewater State College (Mass.) at 4 pm.
