Pitching Performance Leads Builders Over Bridgewater State 2-1

VERO BEACH, FLA. -- Senior Travis Franklin and freshman Sam Massie combined for a three-hitter as the Apprentice School completed a sweep on Saturday by defeating Bridgewater State University 2-1 at Vero Beach Sports Village on Saturday night.

The Bears scored their run in the top of the first inning on an unearned run as with two outs David Pierce singled and advanced on a wild pitch before scoring on a dropped fly ball.

Apprentice School (5-5) responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as Trevin Wilson singled and stole second before scoring on a RBI single from Travis Franklin.  He advanced to second as Chris Perry was hit by a pitch and Franklin scored on a RBI single from Cody Norris to take the 2-1 lead.

In the ninth, Bridgewater State made one last flurry as after one out, Ian Williams ripped a single up the middle but that was it as Massie enduced a game-ending double play.  The Bears were a NCAA Division III Tournament team in 2011 and were pre-season picked to win the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Franklin threw six innings and allowed the lone run with two hits and three strikeouts to earn the victory.  Freshman Sam Massie came in and threw three innings with only one hit and four strikeouts to earn the save. Norris was 2-for-3 with the game-winning RBI to lead a seven-hit attack for the Builders.

Apprentice School closes out its swing in Vero Beach with a U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader against Penn State Greater Allegheny starting at noon.  A win in either game will give head coach Bryan Cave his 500th career victory.
