Baseball Builders Blast Trojans 10-1

PETERSBURG, VA. – Behind a five RBI day from sophomore Zach Harding and a strong pitching performance from senior Daniel Lutz, the Apprentice School defeated Virginia State 10-1 on Tuesday afternoon at Whaley Colbert Field on the Trojans campus.

Apprentice School got on the board quickly with a pair of runs in the first inning as Trevin Wilson singled and stole his way to third base before scoring on an error.  Chris Aldridge walked, stole second and scored on a RBI single from Travis Franklin for the 2-0 lead.

The Builders pushed three across in the top of the third as with two outs, Franklin was hit by a pitch before walks were issused to Andrew Hooper and Ryan Hendrickson.  Harding came up and smashed a bases-clearing double to put the Builders up 5-0.

Virginia State only had a pair of walks in the first four innings before scoring their lone run in the fifth as Josh McCarty singled and went to third on a William Tapp double. Kelvin Davis' ground out plated McCarty with the lone run for the Trojans.

In the eighth, the Builders scored four times as Harding and Wilson singled in runs while Devorn Lake drove in a pair with a single.  Harding capped off his five RBI day with a triple in the ninth to score Justin Hike who reached on an error.

Lutz threw the first eight innings and allowed only four hits and the one run.  Fellow senior Will Miller pitched the ninth to seal the 10-1 win. Harding was 3-for-5, while Wilson was 3-for-4 for the lone multi-hit players for the Builders on Tuesday.

The busy week continues for the Builders as they will host College of the Albemarle in a 5 pm start at War Memorial Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
