Builders Bats Slay Dragons

HAMPTON, VA. -- The Apprentice School baseball team took on Virginia University of Lynchburg in the first-ever meeting on the baseball diamond Thursday afternoon and came away with a 21-1 victory at War Memorial Stadium.

Junior Devorn Lake threw the first four innings allowing one hit and striking out five to earn his second win, while Robert Brownschidle threw the final two innings allowing one run and striking out two.

The Builders started the game with a six-run first inning behind a RBI triple from Zach Harding.  After an unearned run in the second, the Builders put four on the board in the third as Travis Franklin drove in a pair with a single.

Jordan Cowles singled in the lone run in the fourth before the Builders put up a nine-run fifth inning as Daniel Hudgins had the big hit of the inning with a two-run double.

Lamar Henderson had the lone single for the Dragons with a two-out single in the fourth inning as this was the second one-hitter of the year for the Builders.

Cowles was 3-for-4 with four RBIs, while Andrew Hooper, Travis Cherry and Hudgins had a pair of hits each for the Builders.

Apprentice School (22-12) has a big doubleheader on Saturday in Buena Vista, Va. against U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association rival Southern Virginia University at 1 pm.
