Baseball Falls Twice At Southern Virginia

BUENA VISTA, VA. – The homestanding Southern Virginia University Knights swept the Apprentice School in a U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader on Saturday winning the opener 8-4 and the nightcap 8-5 at Parry McCluer High School.

In game one, the Knights opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the second inning as Mitch Mantle reached on a fielders choice to score Brandon Alexander who opened the inning with a single.  Mantle later scored on a double steal and error on throw to put SVU up 2-0.

Alexander drove in all three runs in the third inning with a three-run home run.  He followed that with a two-run shot in the fifth inning to go with a solo home run from Tyler Cox to lead 8-2.

The Builders put up two runs in the to of the fourth on a two-run home run from Zach Harding and two more in the seventh on RBI singles from Devorn Lake and Travis Franklin.

Chris Perry was the losing pitcher in game one throwing 4.2 innings and allowing eight hits and eight runs.  Lake and Justin Hike had two hits each while Harding drove in two with his home run.

In the second game, the Builders trailed 7-1 in the bottom of the fourth and made a run to cut the game to 7-5 late before the Knights scratched an insurance run for the win.

The Builders (22-14) return home to start a three-game homestand on Tuesday as they face Virginia Wesleyan College at 4 pm at War Memorial Stadium.
