Builders Erupt In 19-5 Win Over Danville

HAMPTON, VA. -- The Apprentice School baseball team put up 11-runs in the third inning and cruised to a 19-5 win over Danville CC on Friday afternoon at War Memorial Stadium.

Danville opened the game scoring all five of its runs in the first inning as Kris Williamson doubled to start the game and scored on a single from Jake Coleman.  Mike McCollum followed with a two-run home run to left field putting the Knights up 3-0 before the first out.  Following a strikeout and a pair of walks, Tyler Lecik doubled down the left field line to put Danville ahead 5-0.

The Builders responded with a pair of runs in the second as Trevin Wilson doubled to left to score Matt Zapf and Andrew Hooper.  In the third inning, the Builders put 16 men up to bat as they scored 11 runs.  Chris Scarola, Ryan Hendrickson and Zapf drove in a pair of runs each in the big inning.

Apprentice School (24-15) put two more up in the fourth on a two-run single from Devorn Lake.  In the fifth, Travis Franklin drove in two with a single and Zapf scored on a wild pitch to put the lead at 18-5.  Wilson's groundout in the sixth plated the final run of the game that was stopped after the top of the seventh by the 10-run rule.

Chris Perry picked up his team-leading fifth win on the year settling down after the shaky first inning.  He allowed five hits, only one after the first inning, in five innings of work.  Will Miller pitched the sixth and Travis Cherry closed the game.

Scarola was the leading hitter going 3-for-4 with a pair of runs and a pair of RBI in the game.  Seven other Builders had two hits, while Wilson drove in four runs and Franklin three on the night.

The Builders travel on Wednesday to Elizabeth City, N.C. to face College of the Albemarle at 3 pm before ending the regular season with a pair of home games on April 27 and May 1.
