Baseball Starts USCAA Classic With Pair Of Wins

VERO BEACH, FL. – The Apprentice School opened play on Thursday in the 2013 USCAA Spring Classic at Dodgertown and came away with a pair of impressive wins to raise its record to 9-1 on the season.

They opened the day with an 8-6 win over Penn State Greater Allegheny and ended with a three-run sixth to take the lead and added an insurance run in the eighth to defeat NAIA West Virginia Tech 4-2.

In the nightcap, the Golden Bears scored the first run of the game as Raul Torres' two-out single plated Grant Williams who walked, stole second and advanced to third on one of five Apprentice School errors.

The Golden Bears pushed a second run across in the top of the sixth as Jose Soto hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Zach Sizemore who had doubled and went to third on a ground out.

Apprentice School scored three times in the bottom of the sixth as Devorn Lake singled to right scoring Chris Scarola.  Lake scored from second on a throwing error, while a wild pitch plated Mark Labrador for the 3-2 lead.

In the eighth, the Builders added an insurance run as Chris Aldridge belted a triple to right-center and scored on a sacrifice fly from Labrador.

Ryland Edwards earned his first win of 2013 in the nightcap throwing 7.2 innings and striking out seven while allowing three hits.  Sam Massie threw the final 1.1 innings and struck out three to earn his second save of the year.  Aldridge had two hits for the Builders to lead the Builders against West Virginia Tech.

 

APPRENTICE SCHOOL 8, PENN STATE GREATER ALLEGHENY 6

Freshman Brock Harris was 3-for-3 as the Apprentice School scored early and defeated Penn State Greater Allegheny 8-6 in the first game of their three-day swing at the USCAA Spring Classic.

The Builders scored first pushing two across in the top of the first as Trevin Wilson led off with a double and went to third in an infield single from Chris Scarola.  Devorn Lake drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Mark Labrador followed with a triple to plate Scarola.

After giving up a pair in the bottom of the first, the Builders scored three times in the top of the second as Scarola drove in two with a single and the third scored on a passed ball.

Penn State Greater Allegheny scored two in the bottom of the second before the Builders plated one in the third as Chris Perry and Harris singled with one out.  After an infield fly, Zach Harding singled in Perry to lead 6-4.

Apprentice School scored single run in the fourth as with two outs, Chris Aldridge tripled and Lake singled him in.  In the sixth, Wilson started with a single and stole second before Lake reached on an error to score him.

Wilson, Scarola and Harding all had two hits for the Builders as David Sebera earned the win.  He threw 4.2 innings and allowed one hit and one run with five strikeouts in relief of starter Chad Gurganus
