Builders Split Doubleheader With Bridgewater St. - End Vero Beach 5-1

VERO BEACH, FLA. – The Apprentice School closed out its three-day swing in Vero Beach with a split on Saturday with Bridgewater State (MA) losing the opener 3-1 and taking the nightcap 7-3.

With the split, the Builders finished with a 5-1 record after knocking off a NCAA Division III Tournament qualifier in game two at Dodgertown.

In the opener, the Builders scored a run in the second as Mark Labrador doubled and went to third on a balk . He later scored on a wild pitch to give the Builders an early 1-0 lead.  Cody Norris took the loss throwing 3.2 innings and allowing six hits with two strikeouts.  Brock Harris had a 2-for-3 day to get two of the Builders five hits.

Bridgewater State scratched a run across in the third, fourth and fifth innings to take the first game.  Kenny Pennini went seven innings allowing five hits and striking out six for the Bears.

In the nightcap, the Builders broke open quickly scoring two in the top of the first inning.  Trevin Wilson started the game with a single and moved up on a walk to Chris Aldridge.  Following a fly out, Labrador stroked a two-run single to right-center for an early 2-0 lead.

The Bears responded with a pair in the bottom of the first before the Builders pushed three across in the top of the second.  Zach Harding doubled and scored on a wild pitch, Wilson scored on a passed ball and Devorn Lake singled in Aldridge to put Apprentice up 5-2.

Bridgewater scratched a run in the second but that was all as the Builders put up a two-spot in the top of the fourth as Labrador doubled in Chris Scarola and Aldridge to go up 7-3.

Sam Massie came in relief of starter Chad Gurganus and earned the win throwing 3.1 innings with five strikeouts.  Labrador finished the game throwing his first two innings of the season with a pair of strikeouts and one hit allowed.  He was 2-for-4 with four RBI to lead the Builders at the plate.  Wilson scored two runs while Aldridge scored three runs with a pair of walks and being hit by a pitch.

Apprentice School (11-2) returns home for a pair of U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association games on Tuesday hosting Southern Maine CC in a 1 pm doubleheader at War Memorial Stadium.
