Builders Outslug Spartans In 10-6 Win

HAMPTON, VA. – Trevin Wilson,  Chris Aldridge and Devorn Lake had three hits apiece as the Apprentice School needed every one of its 15 hits on Thursday night to defeat Castleton State College 10-6 at War Memorial Stadium.

After giving up a run in the first, the Builders smashed a four-spot in the bottom of the inning as Wilson opened the inning with a single and advanced to second as Brock Harris was hit by a pitch.  Aldridge singled to left scoring Wilson, while Lake followed with a single to score Harris.  Following an out and a walk to Lee Rossi, Cody Seals drove in Lake and Aldridge with a single to right for a 4-1 lead.

Castleton State, a NCAA Division III Tournament qualifier from 2012, responded with three in the second and a run in the third before the Builders put up three more in their half of the third.  Lake started the inning with a double and scored as Seals pushed a single through the left-side of the infield.  A sacrifice fly from Chris Scarola scored Mark Labrador who had singled while the third run scored on a wild pitch to give Apprentice School a 7-5 lead.

The hosts scored two more in the fourth as Scarola singled up the middle to score Lee Rossi and Lake.  They also added one more in the fifth as a sacrifice fly from Harris scored Wilson who started the inning with a single.

The Spartans plated a run in the ninth, but reliever Sam Massie struck out the final batter to end the game and put the Builders to a 14-2 record.

Seals and Scarola drove in three runs each, while Seals joined Wilson, Lake and Aldridge in the multi-hit group with two hits on the night.  Sophomore Ryland Edwards went six innings to earn his second win of the year allowing seven hits.  Massie threw the final three innings, allowing four hits, one run and four strikeouts.

These teams will play again at 1pm on Friday and Castleton State College will follow with a 5pm game against Tufts University at War Memorial Stadium.
