Pitching Efforts Lead Builders To Sunday Doubleheader Sweep

HAMPTON, VA. – Coming off a Saturday doubleheader sweep of NCAA Division III power Tufts University, the Apprentice School used a pair of strong pitching outings from junior Chris Perry and sophomore Cody Norris to sweep Fulton-Montgomery College 2-0 and 8-1 on Sunday.

Game One

The Builders scratched single runs in the second and third innings against starter Matt Snyder as the hosts took the 2-0 victory.  In the second, with two outs Zach Harding singled to left field to plate Cody Seals who had earlier doubled and went to third on a wild pitch to lead 1-0.  Chris Aldridge started the third inning with a single and took second on an error.  Following a steal of third he scored on a sacrifice fly from Mark Labrador to lead 2-0.

That was all that starter Chris Perry needed as he went six innings and struck out a season-high eight batters.  He allowed two hits and walked three while working out of a couple jams early.  Following an error and a pair of walks to load the bases in the second, he struck out Greg Mosetti to end the inning.  In the third, with two on he struck out Bryant Solano to leave a pair of Raiders on base.

Senior David Sebera came in to pitch the seventh inning and after an opening walk, struck out two of the next three to end the game and earn his second save in two days.

Game Two

Sophomore Cody Norris went the distance with a career-high six strikeouts as the Builders broke open game two with a five-run fifth inning to take the 8-1 win.

After giving up a run in the top of the first, Norris found his groove on the mound.  A leadoff double from Shawn Strong in the second was quickly erased as he struck out the next three batters.  That was the last hit given up until a one-out single in the sixth as Norris retired 13 straight batters and 16 out of 17 Raider batters.

Apprentice School tied the game in the third as Chris Scarola started with a double and went to third on a sacrifice from Tim Moore.  An infield groundout from Trevin Wilson plated Scarola to tie the game 1-all.

In the fifth, the Builders broke it open with five runs.  A two-run double from Devorn Lake to go with an RBI single from Jordan Cowles and a pair of runs scoring on wild pitches pushed the Builders to a 6-1 lead.

Two more runs came across for the home team in the bottom of the sixth as Lake struck again with a two-run double to left-center to plate Harding and Wilson who had earlier singled to lead 8-1.

Norris earned the third win on the year for him with his seven innings allowing four hits with six strikeouts.  Lake was 3-for-4 at the plate with a season-high four RBI.  Cowles and Brock Harris had a pair of hits apiece.

Apprentice School (22-4) now travels to Fredericksburg, Va. on Tuesday to face off with the University of Mary Washington Eagles in a 2 pm start.
