RANKINGS: Apprentice (#2 USCAA)

IN BRIEF:

Brock Harris went 4-for-4 with three runs scored as the Apprentice School put up four runs in the fifth and sixth innings to break open a tie game for a 9-6 win over Virginia Wesleyan College on Monday night.  With the win the Builders tie the school record for wins in a season set by the 2004 team (30-12) and U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association National Championship 2007 (30-15) team.

GAME NOTES

  • The Apprentice School opened the scoring in the second inning as Harris started with a bunt single and stole second.  Following a pair of strikeouts, Zach Harding walked and Trevin Wilson hit a single to left field that the 20mph wind caused to drop in front of the left fielder for a run-scoring single.
  • Virginia Wesleyan pushed two runs across in the top of the third as Brett Sutryk hit a sacrifice fly to right which scored Casey King who started the inning with a single.  Kenneth Belgrave followed with a single to right to score Evan Polk who reached on a fielders choice.
  • In the top of the fourth, the Marlins scored another run as Chris Perry started his two innings of work in relief of Taylor Gomer.  Billy Crowe singled and advanced on a groundout and sacrifice fly before scoring as Polk laid down a squeeze bunt in which the throw home was high and Crowe slid in for a 3-1 lead.
  • VWC scratched a run in the top of the fifth as Belgrave walked and scored as Jordan Miller doubled to left center but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple.
  • Apprentice School scored its first four-run inning in the fifth as Chris Aldridge beat out an infield single to first base and scored as Devorn Lake ripped a double into right-center.  After Cody Seals was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game, Harris beat out a bunt single to load the bases.  A wild pitch plated Lake and following a strikeout, Ryan Hendrickson blasted a double into left-center to score Harris and Seals for a 5-4 lead.
  • The Builders put four more across in the bottom of the sixth as Chris Scarola started with a double and scored as Lake followed with his second RBI double of the game.  A walk to Seals sandwiched a couple of wild pitches which scored Lake.  Harris singled to left field to score Seals and he later scored on a wild pitch to lead 9-4.
  • Virginia Wesleyan (11-25) scratched a run in the seventh as Brandon Lineberry singled in Matt Ittner who had a one-out single.  In the eighth, they scored another as Crowe doubled and went to third on a single by Ryan Thorpe.  Casey King followed with a double to score Crowe for a 9-6 score.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE

  • Chris Perry picked up the win throwing two innings in relief of starter Taylor Gomer.  Perry allowed two hits and two runs, while Gomer allowed four hits and two runs in three innings.  David Sebera threw into the eighth allowing six hits and two runs in 2.1 innings.  Sam Massie earned his fourth save of the year throwing the final 1.2 innings and striking out one.
  • The four hits by Brock Harris was the third time this year that a Builder had four hits in a game.  Devorn Lake did it against College of the Albemarle (April 10), while Trevin Wilson pulled the feat against Briarcliffe (February 24).
  • The 30 wins ties the school record set by the 2004 team (30-12) and the 2007 team that won the U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association National Championship (30-15).
