Ten Builders Earn USCAA Post-Season Honors

BUTLER, PA. -- The baseball team had 10 players recognized on Sunday by the U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association for their achievements on the field and in the classroom this season.  Four players were named to the USCAA All-American teams, while six different players were named to the USCAA All-Academic teams at the pre-tournament banquet.

Three players were named to the first team USCAA All-American team in centerfielder Chris Aldridge, first baseman Devorn Lake and relief pitcher Sam Massie.  The honor was the first for Aldridge, while Lake was an honorable mention selection last year.  Massie earned his second first-team USCAA All-American honor.

Aldridge leads the team in batting average (.375) heading into the USCAA Small College World Series.  He has had 17 multi-hit games and six multi-RBI games.  Aldridge has had three hits and three RBI on three occasions this year.  He also is second on the team in stolen bases with 22.

Lake is right behind Aldridge in batting average (.368) and has turned it on in the last month of the season with five multi-hit games in his last seven.   He has had 11 multi-RBI games to lead the team and has driven in four twice against Fulton-Montgomery and Thomas Nelson on Senior Night last Tuesday.

Massie was named to the team for the second straight year after sporting a 4-2 record with four saves and a 1.86 earned run average.  He has 34 strikeouts in 29 innings of work primarily as the closer.  He struck out five in a win against Bridgewater State and four strikeouts on three occasions.

Trevin Wilson was named to the second team USCAA All-American squad.  The shortstop is currently batting .353 and leads the team in stolen bases with 23.  He has had 11 multi-hit games, an 11-game hitting streak and has reached base in 20-straight games earlier this year.

Also announced at the banquet were the USCAA All-Academic honorees.  To be named to that list, a student must have at least a 3.5 grade point average and be a sophomore or higher in eligibility.  A total of seven players were named to the list which is the most ever in a season for the baseball team.  Joining Massie on the team were: sophomore outfielder Hayden Champigny, sophomore infielder Jordan Cowles, senior infielder Chris Scarola, sophomore outfielder Lee Rossi, sophomore pitcher Cody Norris and sophomore infielder Daniel Hudgins.

With the four USCAA All-Americans, the Builders have had 54 players earn the honor since 2000, while the total of All-Academic honorees increased to 27.

The Builders will take the field on Monday night in the final game of day one in the 2013 USCAA Small College World Series at approximately 9 pm.  They'll take on the winner of an earlier game on Monday between eighth-seeded St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn and ninth-seeded Briarcliffe College.  You can follow the action of the tournament through the USCAA Small College World Series webpage.
