Baseball Celebrates Record Setting 2013 Season With Awards Cookout

The baseball team celebrated its 2013 season on Sunday afternoon with its annual awards cookout at Newport News Park.  Following are some highlights of the season and the 2013 Apprentice School Baseball award winners.

Team/Individual Highlights

  • Won 10 of first 11 (9 in a row) --best start ever
  • Won 21 of first 25
  • Finished with school record 34 wins (34-10)
  • Winning streaks of 9 and a pair of 7-game streaks
  • Took #1 Salisbury to the limit before falling in the bottom of the ninth
  • Ranked #1 in USCAA in 3 of 5 polls
  • Team ERA was third best in school history (2.80) – best in nine years
  • Opponents batted .230 – third lowest in school history and also best in nine years
  • Chris Aldridge tied school record for triples (7)
  • Devorn Lake tied school record most intentional walks (4)
  • Trevin Wilson/Chris Aldridge tied third most stolen bases in a season (24)
  • Sam Massie set school record for saves (6)
  • Chris Scarola ties career games played and started record (171)
  • Devorn Lake sets career fielding percentage record (.988)

Awards

Leading Hitter   Chris Aldridge   Pipefitter/Toano, VA

  • 2013 USCAA All-American
  • Topped team with 19 multi-hit games, reaching base in 21 straight games, 57 hits and school record tying seven triples
  • Had six multi-RBI games, an 11-game hitting streak
  • Had four games of three hits (Briarcliffe College twice, Castleton State and NCAA South Regional qualifier Bridgewater College)
  • 7th in USCAA in hits (57), 8th in USCAA in runs (37), 1st in triples (7), 4th in stolen bases (24)
  • Raised his average 45 points in the last 12 games going 22-for-45 to end with team best .385 average

Best Defensive Player    Devorn Lake       Rigger/Newport News, VA

  • Four errors in nearly 360 chances (.989) -- career only 10 errors in 865 chances
  • 2013 USCAA All-American
  • 14 multi-hit games, 11 multi-RBI games, seven-game hitting streak and reached base in 10 straight games.
  • Had four hits at College of Albemarle with two home runs
  • Team-high three home runs, 16 doubles, 42 RBIs.

Rookies Of the Year       Cody Seals          Electrician/Hampton, VA

  • Nine multi-hit, six-multi-RBI games
  • Dove in four runs (on pair of two-run doubles) in win over St. Vincent
  • Had a five-game stretch where a double was needed to drive in a run he did (Castleton State, St. Vincent (2), VUL (2)
  • Had team best 12-game hitting streak, reached base in 18 straight games and finished with .258 average.

Rookies of the Year        Brock Harris       Pipefitter/Fluvanna, VA

  • Was a mainstay in right field only making three errors in 70 chances as a freshman
  • Had 10 multi-hit games and a pair of two RBI games against Thomas Nelson and Selma
  • Had a five-game hitting streak and reached base in eight straight games
  • Had a 4-for-4 day against Virginia Wesleyan and ended with a .295 average.

Most Improved                David Sebera     Welder/Prince George, VA

  • Shared closer role and had four saves to go with a 3-0 record and a 2.50 ERA
  • Had wins against Thomas Nelson, Penn State Greater Allegheny and St. Vincent
  • Five strikeouts in 4.2 innings against USCAA runner-up Penn State Greater Allegheny

Builder Award                 Chris Scarola      Dimensional Control Tech/Williamsburg, VA

The Builder Award is presented on behalf of the Apprentice Athletic Club to a student-athlete from each sport that has demonstrated excellence in four areas of their apprenticeship – Craftsmanship, Scholarship, Leadership and Sportsmanship.  A candidate is selected based on their average shop grade over the course of their apprenticeship, their cumulative academic GPA in the World Class Shipbuilding and/or Advanced Curriculum, conduct on the job and the classroom, attendance and overall athletic contributions to their sport over the course of the past year.  Each year the Apprentice Athletic Club presents this award to the student-athlete who embodies the true characteristics necessary to be not only a great Builder, but more importantly a great Shipbuilder.

  • Finished with a .254 batting average
  • Started not only every game as a senior, but all 171 as a Builder – only third player to ever do so under coach Bryan Cave.
  • Had 10 multi-hit games and six multi-RBI games as a senior.
  • He reached base in 16 straight games
  • A three-time USCAA All-Academic selection
