Builders Sweep Pioneers With Late Inning Heroics

IN BRIEF: A six-run sixth in game one and a four-run sixth in game two helped The Apprentice School sweep a U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader from Alfred State on Sunday winning game one 11-2 and taking the nightcap 8-6.

ON THE FIELD – GAME 1

Each team scored single runs in their first two innings before the Builders pushed a run across in the fourth on a bunt single from Brock Harris to score Thomas Dudley.  In the fifth, the Builders scored twice as Brian Belvin started with a walk and stole second.  He scored on a single from Lee Rossi who took second on an error.  A pair of passed balls allowed Rossi to score to put the Apprentice School lead to 5-2.

In the sixth, the Builders batted around and plated six runs as they took advantage of three errors by the Pioneers.  Harris drove in Thomas Richardson who drew a walk and Christian Burton later had a sacrifice fly to score Belvin as the Builders won the opener 11-2.

Taylor Gomer threw six innings and struck out five to earn his second win of the year.  Freshman James Anthony threw the seventh and struck out one to close the game.  Trevin Wilson was 3-for-3 with a run scored and reached base every at bat to lead the Builders at the plate.

GAME 2

The Builders took an early lead scoring a run in the first on a RBI single from Belvin to plate Harris who reached on an error. 

Alfred State batted around in the top of the fourth to score five runs as Jordan Wheaton delivered a 3-run triple to put the visitors up 5-1.

Apprentice School scratched a run in the bottom of the fourth as Chris Aldridge singled and went to second on a groundout.  Rossi followed with a single to score Aldridge cutting the margin to 5-2.

In the fifth, the Builders put two more across as with two outs, Harris singled in Wilson who reached on a fielders choice.  After Harris stole second he scored on a double from Chris Aldridge to make the score 5-4.

The Builders broke it open in the sixth with four runs as Aldridge drove in three with a deep triple to right field and he later scored on a RBI single from Belvin for the 8-5 score.

Sam Massie pitched the final 3.1 innings and struck out seven for his second win of the year.  Aldridge was 3-for-4 with four RBI to lead the Builders at the plate.  Belvin joined him in the multi-hit club going 2-for-3 with two RBI.

BEHIND THE BOXSCORE

  • For the three-game series, Aldrdige was 6-for-11 with six runs scored to lead the Builders.
  • Belvin and Rossi each hit .500 for the weekend as Belvin was 4-for-8 with five RBI and Rossi was 3-for-6 with four RBI.
  • In the Sunday doubleheader, Aldridge hit .625 going 5-for-8 with four RBI.
  • Harris was 3-for-6 with three RBI, while Wilson was 3-for-7 with two runs scored.

The Builders head to Historic Dodgertown at Vero Beach, Florida to face Rochester College on Thursday at noon.  They'll also face NCAA Division II University of Mary on Thursday night at 7 pm.
