Early Start Leads Builders Over Royals 7-3

IN BRIEF: The Apprentice School  used a five-run fourth and a complete game performance from senior Chris Perry as they defeated Eastern Mennonite University 7-3 on Wednesday afternoon.

ON THE FIELD

  • The Builders opened the scoring in the third inning as Trevin Wilson started with a single and advanced on a groundout.  Chris Aldridge took a single to left field allowing Wilson to score for the early 1-0 lead.
  • In the fourth, the Builders broke the game open scoring five runs.  Mark Labrador and Lee Rossi started the inning with singles and both advanced on a balk.  A Wilson sacrifice fly to center scored Labrador, while Brock Harris followed with a single to left to plate Rossi for a 3-0 lead. 
  • Aldridge took a first pitch single to right-center which moved Harris to third.  After Aldridge swiped second base, Brian Belvin smacked a double to left field to plate Harris and Aldridge to give the Builders a 5-0 lead.  Belvin scored on the next batter as Christian Burton singled up the middle to give the hosts a 6-0 advantage.
  • Apprentice School scratched another run in the fifth as with one out, Perry singled and advanced to second on a groundout.  Following a walk to Harris, Aldridge singled up the middle to score Perry for a 7-0 lead.
  • The Royals pushed three acriss in the top of the seventh on a RBI single from David Meehan, a sacrifice fly from Adam Posey and they took advantage of an error to trim the margin to 7-3.


BEHIND THE BOXSCORE

  • This was the second complete game of the year for Perry as he allowed seven hits and struck out five to put his record at 4-2.
  • Wednesday was the first time all season that each member of the starting lineup had at least one hit for the Builders.
  • Aldridge was 3-for-5 with a pair of RBIs, while Belvin was 2-for-5 also with two RBIs.
  • Burton, Labrador and Javier Remigio all had two hits each for the Builders who out-hit Eastern Mennonite 15-7.
  • Posey and Justin Rodriguez topped the Royals (14-15) going 2-for-4 each.
  • This marked the 14th straight year and 17th in the last 18 that the Builders have won 20 games in a season.


NEXT UP – Virginia State

The Builders return to action at 2 pm on Friday when they host NCAA Division II Virginia State University for the first of two games with the Trojans.  These teams will square off again on April 11 on the Virginia State campus.
