Baseball falls to Paul D. Camp in first game of the Hampton Roads Cup

Hampton, VA – After a long layoff, the Apprentice Baseball team was finally back on the field to start their 2022 campaign, as they participated in the annual Hampton Roads Cup.  The Cup pits the local 757 small college teams against each other in a round robin format and the Builders drew Paul D. Camp Community in their first day of competition.  The two teams are no strangers to each other, and both have been very successful in their respective leagues.  This would also be the first game for Coach Ben Jones at the helm of Apprentice and he was looking for his team to get the season started on a positive note.

Senior Andrew Castine got the start for the Builders and was able to get out of the 1st inning with only giving up one hit.  However, in Apprentice's half of the inning they were unable to get anything going and at the end of one, the score remained, 0-0.  The top of the 2nd inning would not be kind to the Builders, as the Hurricanes' bats came alive allowing them to bring 5 runs across the plate.  Jake Day would get the first hit of the game for Apprentice but, unfortunately, he was not able to advance hone.  The score would remain 5-0, until the 5th inning when Camp put another run on the scoreboard and then another two in the 7th inning and that would end the game with the Builders falling to the Hurricanes by a final score of 8-0.

Apprentice was led by Jake Day (1-2), Camden Weston (1-3) and Caleb Russell (1-3) who combined for the Builders 3 hits on the day.  Coach Jones and his team will look to bounce back tomorrow afternoon as they face Bryant & Stratton College.  First pitch is scheduled for 2:00pm at Historic War Memorial Stadium.
