Baseball Sweeps Friday Twinbill Against St. Vincent

HAMPTON - The Apprentice School baseball team took down St. Vincent in a pair of games Friday at War Memorial Stadium, coming from behind in both contests.

After the Bearcats took the early 2-0 lead in the first game of the day, the Builders finally broke through in the third inning, putting up four runs in the frame. Hunter Johnson tied up the game on a RBI double to left before Riggs Ellis gave Apprentice the lead on a two RBI single through the left side.

Apprentice added a fifth run in the sixth inning on a Matt Phoebus single, giving Logan Mize a cushion to earn his fourth save of the season and put the Builders on top.

In the nightcap, the Builders took an early 3-0 lead in the second inning off a Nolan Edwards two-run bomb before pushing another run across later in the inning, but SVC answered in the top of the third with a five run frame to take the lead. Caleb Russell started the comeback in the fifth with a solo shot over the fence in left center to trim the lead.

After Ellis tied the game up in the sixth on a RBI triple, Jeremy Harmon walked the game off with a bases loaded single to secure the sweep.

Isaac McCallister got the win in the first game, before Mize claimed the win in the second game.

The two teams will meet up again tomorrow at 12 p.m.
