Baseball Knocks Off VPCC on Senior Day, 5-4

HAMPTON - On a day where seniors were honored and the 2022 national championship team received their rings, the Apprentice School baseball team mounted a comeback to defeat Virginia Peninsula Community College, 5-4, Thursday night at War Memorial Stadium.

The Builders got on the board first in the fourth inning as senior Braxton Wallace hit a three-run bomb over the wall just inside the left field foul pole to take a 3-0 lead. The Gators battled back to score a run in the sixth and three in the seventh to take a 4-3 lead.

Apprentice answered in the eighth, scoring a pair of runs off back-to-back doubles from Hunter Johnson and Jeremy Harmon to retake the lead, setting up Logan Earley to close the door in the ninth for his first save.

Tyler Winegrad put up over five innings of three hit baseball, allowing just one run on his senior day. Logan Mize also got action, getting out of a jam in the sixth inning.

Camden Weston and Johnson each went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead the way for Apprentice.

The Builders will wrap up the regular season with a 1 p.m. doubleheader in New South Athletic Conference action against Virginia State Tuesday at War Memorial Stadium.
