Football Honors 2010 Accomplishments With Season-Ending Banquet

                    

The 2010 football season officially wrapped up on Monday night as the team honored the accomplishments on the season with its annual banquet at the Point Plaza Hotel.

Twelve All-Atlantic Central Football Conference awards were announced as senior Bryan Cain was named Co-Offensive Player of the Year.  He was joined on the first team by Michael Carta (offensive line) and James Lee (defensive line).

Seven players were named to the second team: Robert Gilmore (tight end), Larry Peterson (offensive line), Kyell Collins (defensive line), Andrew Balarabe (defensive line), Marlon Lane (defensive back), Louis Norwood (return specialist) and Johnathan Jones (linebacker).

Two more were named honorable mention All-Conference: Tyler Johnson (tight end) and Daniel Richmond (defensive back).

 

2010 Awards

Special Teams Player Of the Year               James Lee

Blocked three kicks during the season – including one in each of his last two games.  Major role on punt protection unit as well as his knack for getting to the ball on blocking kicks.

Offensive Rookie Of the Year                      Michael Carta

A solid force on the offensive line as a freshman…Graded out the highest of all the linemen as a freshman and named first-team All-Conference. 

Offensive Player Of the Year                       Bryan Cain

Caught 55 passes for 773 yards and eight touchdowns…Finished second in the league in receptions/game, touchdowns, and receiving yards/game.

Defensive Rookie Of The Year                    Brock Bullock

16 solo tackles/11 assisted/27 totals – 2.5 tackles for loss…8 tackles at third-ranked Wesley in his first collegiate start. 

Defensive Player Of The Year                     Johnathan Jones

Topped the team in tackles with 71, 11.5 for a loss, five sacks, three forced fumbles, two interceptions and two fumble recoveries.  Season high 10 tackles and scored on a 30-yard fumble recovery against Alfred State.

Defensive Player Of The Year                     Marlon Lane

Second on the team in tackles with 59, 4.5 for a loss, six pass breakups, four interceptions – one returned for a touchdown against FDU-Florham and two blocked kick returns for points against Frostburg State and Webber International.

Defensive Player Of The Year                     James Lee

A four-year defensive lineman who had 45 tackles, 18 for a loss and six sacks on the year.  His 18 tackles for a loss and his six sacks puts him in the top four in the ACFC in both categories.  Had a season high eight tackles against Southern Virginia.

Builder Award                                     Andrew Balarabe

This is a player who exemplifies great work values and leadership on the job as well as the football field.  A four-year linebacker who was named to the second team All-ACFC this season.  Had 29 tackles, 8 tackles for a loss, two sacks.

Determination Award                               James Lee

In recognition of the intangibles needed for success that are not measured in statistics, and are often unrecognized by many.  These characteristics include (but not limited to) desire, hustle, team spirit, dedication and extra effort.  A four-year defensive lineman who had 45 tackles, 18 for a loss and six sacks on the year … His 18 tackles for a loss leads and his six sacks puts him in the top four in the ACFC in both categories.

Pop Lamkin Award                                      Bryan Cain

Awarded to a senior football player that combines solid playing contribution and put the team's interests ahead of his own, and displays a high level of commitment toward off-season and in-season preparation.  This senior is a versatile performer who has seen action at return specialist and wide receiver.  A two-time first team All-ACFC wide receiver – he finished his career in the top four all-time in receiving yards (1,792), receptions (137) and touchdowns (13).
