GREENSBORO, NC – A second half comeback attempt by the Apprentice School came up short on Saturday as the Builders fell 20-13 to Greensboro College at Jamieson Stadium.

Greensboro (2-1) opened the scoring with a flurry in the first quarter as Mark Bush hit a 30-yard field goal on the first possession for the Pride to lead 3-0 with 13:29 left.  After holding the Builders on their first possession, the Pride scored again as Ryan Throndset found Tyrone Fearrington on a 15-yard scoring pass to cap off a nine-play, 43-yard drive putting the hosts ahead 10-0.

The final touchdown of the first quarter for the Pride came after a Blake Penix punt for the Builders pinned them on their one-yard line.  They proceeded to march 99 yards in 13 plays as Throndset connected with Antwan Thorpe for an 11-yard scoring pass to lead 17-0 with 42 seconds left in the first quarter.

Apprentice School got on the scoreboard with special teams play late in the second quarter.  Freshman Ralick Lockett blocked a punt that was recovered by Chris Virgin in the end zone for a Builder touchdown to cut the deficit to 17-7 with 3:40 left in the half.  That appeared to change the momentum as the Builder defense stepped up on the ensuing play and Teyquan Mayfield intercepted a Throndset pass and returned it 17 yards to the Pride 46. 

Greensboro snuffed out a drive attempt and took over with 42 seconds left.  Three Throndset completions got the Pride within field goal distance as Nick La Toof drilled a 40-yard field goal to close the half putting the Pride ahead 20-7.

After a scoreless third quarter, the Builders took possession on their 20 with 1:54 left and found a touchdown on the legs of Lockett.  The tailback broke several tackles early and out-raced the secondary 67 yards for a touchdown.  That run equaled the fifth-longest by a Builder since 1985 as Reggie George broke off a 67-yarder against Salisbury in the 2009 season.  The extra-point attempt and ensuing on-side kick failed as the Builders fell to 1-2 on the year.

Jonathan Whelan and Paul Morgan split quarterback duties and were nearly identical in statistics as Whelan was 9-for-15 for 54 yards, while Morgan was 8-for-17 for 53 yards.  Lockett, on the strength of his 67-yard touchdown, was the leading rusher with 75 yards on three carries.  Jodey McNeil had 14 attempts for 58 yards, while Chris Virgin ran five times for 30 yards.  Al Little caught seven passes to lead the receivers while Trevon Johnson hauled in six for 52 yards.  Defensively, Izhia Roundtree had his best game with a season-high 12 tackles and a sack.  Junior Brock Bullock added 10 tackles for the Builders.

Apprentice School now travels to Washington, DC to face Gallaudet University at 5 pm on September 22.
