FOOTBALL (1-8)

The Apprentice School closes out its 2014 season on Saturday in Ave Maria, Florida as they face the Gyrenes of Ave Maria University.

Last year, these teams met for the first time to close out the season in Newport News as the Gyrenes took a 42-21 decision.  Ave Maria quarterback Clayton Uecker threw for 405 yards and four touchdowns for the Gyrenes.  The Builders were topped by Joseph Hodge who ran for 113 yards and Kyle Elmore who caught four passes for 64 yards and a touchdown.

The Gyrenes have scored over 30 points in three of their last four contests, including winning 42-41 last weekend over Point University.  Apprentice School enters off a 31-6 loss to Webber International University.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

The 2014-15 Apprentice School Lady Builders will open their season this weekend in Monaca, Pennsylvania as they participate in the Penn State Beaver Tip-off Tournament.  They'll take on the hosts at 6 pm on Saturday night, while Carlow University takes on Penn State DuBois in the 4pm opener.

Apprentice School returns six players from last year's 22-5 team that advanced to the United States Collegiate Athletic Association National Semifinals.  Senior Shanae Hilliard is the leading returning scorer averaging 10.3 points and hit a school record 60 3-pointers.  Junior point guard Kenya Wilkerson averaged 8.5 points and almost five assists per game as she earned USCAA Honorable Mention All-American honors last year.

The series with Penn State Beaver has had a pair of tightly contested games, both won by the Nittany Lions.  They defeated the Lady Builders in the 2009 USCAA National Tournament 59-58 on a 30-foot bank shot at the buzzer and then defeated them 64-55 to open the 2009-10 season in Monaca.

MEN'S BASKETBALL (2-0)

The men's team hits the local hardwood this weekend traveling to Virginia Wesleyan College to participate in the Marlin Tip-off Tournament starting Saturday at 5 pm when they face Delaware Valley College.  The 7pm nightcap will have the Marlins, ranked 19th in the country, who will face The College of New Jersey.

The Builders enter 2-0 after winning a pair of games in the Penn State Greater Allegheny Tip-off last weekend.  Junior Jay Melendez averaged 22 points and 7.5 rebounds last weekend while senior Johnnie Ferebee chipped in 21 points, 8.5 rebounds and 7.5 assists in the two games.  Freshman Michael Gainey had 22 points in the win over Penn State Greater Allegheny and shares the rebounding lead also averaging 8.5 boards per game.

This will be the first-ever meeting with Delaware Valley College who returns 10 players from last year, brought in four transfers and went from not making their conference tournament to picked to win their division and finish third in the Freedom Conference.

Virginia Wesleyan will be running a live video and live stats feed this weekend
