Ten Builders Named To All-USCAA Football Team

The 2014 All-United States Collegiate Athletic Association teams were announced on Wednesday and four Builders were named to the first team, while five earned second team and one earned honorable mention honors.

First Team honors included:

Tight End: Alvin Goodwyn, Jr., Shipfitter, Franklin, VA

  • Was adapt at blocking as well as a dependable receiver.
  • He caught three passes for 35 yards and had a touchdown against Alfred State in the second meeting.

Defensive Back: Brandon Hampton, So., Millwright, Timmonsville, SC

  • Finished with a team-high 63 tackles
  • Had season-high 11 tackles against Bluefield College.
  • Added nine against Alfred State and eight against Webber International.

Kicker: Austin Wall, Fr., Pipefitter, Suffolk, VA

  • Converted 15 extra-point attempts and hit a pair of field goals in his first season.
  • Earned USCAA Special Teams Player of the Week honors after going 3-for-3 in extra-points and hit a 29-yard field goal at Catholic University.
  • Made three extra-point attempts in four games – Catholic, Edward Waters and both Alfred State games.

Punter: Blake Penix, Sr., Electrician, Jesup, GA.

  • Second time he's earned first-team punter honors after doing it last season.
  • Finished second in the USCAA in punting average (37.7) and had 15 punts land inside the 20-yardline.
  • He finished his career holding all the punting records for the Builders.

Second Team honors went to:

Quarterback: Deon Lavender, Fr., Insulator, Bailey, NC

  • Finished the year 72-of-121 for 943 yards and six touchdowns. 
  • His 59.4% completion percentage was tops in the USCAA, while his 943 yards and six touchdowns were second.
  • He threw for a season-best 194 yards at Ave Maria University, while tossing three touchdowns in the home game against Alfred State.

Offensive Line: Austin Goforth, So., Outside Machinist, Troy, NC

Offensive Line: Gino Saunders, Jr., Shipfitter, Roanoke, VA.

  • Started every game on the offensive line and helped lead the Builders to their highest total offense output in 20 years.

Linebacker: Leland Hamilton, So., Molder, Winter Haven, FL

  • Finished tied for third on team in tackles with 61.
  • Had season-high nine tackles against U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and Webber International.
  • Added eight against Coppin State and Bluefield College.

Defensive Line: Ryan Ransom, Fr., Insulator, Hayes, VA

  • Topped team in tackles for loss with 13.
  • Finished tied for third on team in tackles with 61
  • Had 11 tackles, with 4.5 for a loss against Bluefield College.
  • Added nine against Catholic and Webber International.

 Honorable Mention

Defensive Line: Erol Carter, Sr., Molder, Baker County, FL

  • Finished second on team in tackles with 62.
  • Had season-high 11 tackles against Bluefield College.
  • Added nine tackles against Catholic and seven against Coppin State and Edward Waters.
