Builders Race To 87-75 Victory Over Southern Virginia - Spratley Joins 1,000-point Club

NEWPORT NEWS, VA. - A balanced Apprentice School attack saw six players in double figures as the Builders defeated Southern Virginia 87-75 in a U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association matchup on Tuesday night.

Senior Fred Spratley needed 12 points on the night for 1,000 career points and he hit the mark on a layup with 50 seconds left.  The Suffolk native became the third Builder in the last 20 years to score 1,000 career points.

Both teams opened the game blistering the nets as the Knights went on a 10-2 run over a 2:29 span to take an 18-10 lead on a 3-pointer from Wesley Evans with 14:29 left.  The Builders followed with a 13-2 spurt over the next 3:15 for a 23-20 advantage on a 3-pointer from Jason Arrington with 11:14 remaining.

Apprentice School never trailed from that point as the teams started to slow the pace.  The Builders' Eric Ruffin hit a free throw with 7:38 to give the hosts a 26-24 lead.  That started them on a 15-4 run over the next 24-8 run over the next seven minutes to give the Builders a 50-32 lead on a Ruffin layup with seven seconds left.

In the second half, the Builders pushed the lead to 65-45 on a Ruffin 3-pointer with 15:15 remaining.  Southern Virginia cut the lead down to 69-58 on a Dele Opeifa layup with 9:40 left.  The Builders answered with seven of the next nine points to take a 76-60 advantage on an Isaih Harrison jumper with 7:23 remaining.  From there the lead never shrunk below 11 from there.

Ruffin was the leading scorer for the Builders with 18 points and 10 assists to lead six players in double figures.  Harrison was next with 16 points, five rebounds and five assists, while Eric Joe had 14 points, six rebounds and a career-high five assists.  Spratley added 12 points, three rebounds and three assists, while Jason Arrington chipped in with 11 points.

Next up for the men is a trip to Miami, Florida to face USCAA rival Johnson & Wales on Saturday afternoon for a 2 pm tipoff.
