WASHINGTON, DC - The Apprentice School used a 16-4 run over a 6:07 span of the second half to break open a tight contest and defeat the University of District of Columbia 70-60 in a men's basketball contest Saturday afternoon.
In the first half, the Builders used a 19-7 spurt early to take a 21-9 advantage on an Eric Joe free throw with 10:11 left. The Firebirds answered by closing the half on a 20-5 run to take a 29-26 lead into halftime on a Chris Leach layup with 14 seconds left.
Apprentice School trailed 36-35 in the second half at the 15:17 mark before going on a 9-0 run to take a 44-36 lead on a Joe free throw with 12:55 left. UDC had one last run in them cutting the deficit to 46-45 on a Leach layup with 10:52 remaining. The Builders put away the Firebirds with that 16-4 run to take a 62-49 lead on an Isaih Harrison layup with 4:45 left.
Harrison was the leading scorer in the game for the Builders with 33 points and 10 rebounds. That was his sixth double-double in the last seven games. Joe added 15 points for the Builders who shot 51.9% from the floor (27-of-52) and out rebounded the hosts 31-24.
Apprentice School (9-10) now will travel to Media, Pa. and face Williamson Trade on Saturday, January 30 at 2 pm.
