Late Free Throws Lifts Men Over St. Andrews 82-78

LAURINBURG, N.C. – Junior Tim Johnson scored a career-high 26 points and the Apprentice School used three free throws in the last 16.1 seconds to hold on for an 82-78 victory over St. Andrews Presbyterian College on Monday night.

St. Andrews' Antonio Moffitt hit a layup to tie the game at 77-all with 51 seconds left, but Johnson's layup 10 seconds later gave the Builders a 79-77 advantage that they maintained for the win.  Moffitt hit one of two from the foul line with 22 seconds left cutting the deficit to 79-78 but Joe Lyons hit a pair of free throws with 17 seconds left to go up 81-78.

A 3-pointer from Earl Streater bounced off the front of the rim into the hands of Tevin Andrews who hit the back end of a two-shot foul to give Apprentice School the 82-78 win.

The game was tightly contested with 12 ties, 16 lead changes and 52 fouls called.  Apprentice School jumped out early to a 14-6 lead on a jumper from Isaih Harrison with 13:20 left.  The Knights answered with a 12-2 run to take an 18-16 lead on a three-point play from Marvin Jackson.

Johnson helped open up the inside game for the Builders who had to control 6-foot-10 Marcus Connor who fouled out with 6:28 left after he had swatted 10 Apprentice School shots.  From there, the Builders scored their remaining field goals on layups with Johnson accounting for three of the final five field goals.

Harrison added 14 points and set a career-high with his 19 rebounds marking the highest total in a game since Maze Toomer had 19 against Southwestern (Ariz.) College on Nov. 30, 2001.  Andrews had 14 points and six rebounds, while Andre Henderson added 12 points and five boards.  Apprentice School dominated the glass outrebounding the Knights 55-39, including a 23-13 edge on the offensive boards.

The men continue a swing in the Carolinas next weekend heading to Barber-Scotia College in Salisbury, N.C. for a 6 pm tip on Friday night.  They'll end that swing visiting Francis Marion University in Florence, S.C. for a 4 pm tip on Saturday afternoon.
