Builders Open Home Schedule With 86-75 Win Over Barber-Scotia In MLK Classic

NEWPORT NEWS, VA. – After 14 straight games on the road, the Apprentice School men's basketball team hit the home hardwood on Friday night and defeated Barber-Scotia College 86-75 in the second day of the 2011 Martin Luther King Jr. Classic at Apprentice Gym.

The teams traded slim advantages in the first 7:20 as a pair of Latrone Demiel free throws put the Builders up 12-11.  After a Herve Bello 3-pointer nine seconds later put Barber-Scotia (4-8) put them ahead 14-12, the Builders went on an 25-10 run to take a 37-24 advantage on a dunk from Isaih Harrison with 4:33 left. 

A layup from Harrison put the Builders up 44-30 with 1:41 left, but Barber-Scotia closed the first half scoring the last five points to cut the deficit to 44-35 on a Ke'vontae Hairlson jumper at the buzzer.

In the second half, after giving up the opening points on a Chris McClurkin jumper 48 seconds into the final 20 minutes the Builders went wild on an 18-3 run to take a 62-40 lead on a dunk from Harrison with 13:41 left. 

Barber-Scotia responded on a 17-7 run cutting the lead down to 69-57 on a free throw from Darrell Grady with 6:43 left, but they could get no closer than the final margin of 11 points from there.

Harrison was the leading scorer with 29 points and 13 rebounds, while Tevin Andrews added 21 points, seven rebounds and four assists.  Demiel also added 11 points and a game-high seven assists for the Builders who hit 28-fo-53 from the floor (52.8%) for the contest.

Apprentice School will now face Rhema Bible College in day three of the MLK Classic Saturday night at 6 pm.
