Men's Basketball Falls 89-74 At Southern Virginia

BUENA VISTA, VA. – Homestanding Southern Virginia University used a 29-10 run over a nearly eight minute span of the first half to get a comfortable lead and hold off the Apprentice School 89-74 on Saturday in a U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association matchup.

The Builders scored the first four points of the game before the Knights exploded on their run.  Four 3-pointers from Spenser Briggs in that run helped put the Knights ahead as a 3-pointer from Casey Nye gave the hosts a 29-14 lead with 11:12.

Southern Virginia closed the half on a 10-3 spurt over the last 5:49 to take a 52-26 lead on a Travis Van Noy layup with 1:07 left.

In the second half, Apprentice School cut what grew to a 29 point lead down to 13 in the last 47 seconds as a Tevin Andrews jumper brought the Builders to 87-74.

Andrews was the leading scorer for the Builders with 20 points, while Isaih Harrison added 15 and Andre Henderson chipped in 13 points.  The Builders were cold from the floor in the first half hitting 11-of-36 (30.6%) while SVU was 19-of-37 (51.4%) and even warmer from 3-point land hitting 8-of-15 (53.3%) while Apprentice was 0-for-11.

The Builders return home to face Livingstone College in a 5 pm tipoff on Tuesday.
