Hot-Shooting Firebirds Knock Off Builders 97-79

NEWPORT NEWS, VA. --- A hot-shooting University of District of Columbia Firebirds used a 25-6 run over a six minute span of the first half to pull away in the first half and take a 97-79 victory over the Apprentice School on Wednesday night.

The Builders jumped to a 16-12 lead with 13:43 left on a free throw from Tim Johnson.  UDC hit its stride on the 25-6 run starting off with a pair of 3-pointers from Keith Brooks and Brandon Herbert.  The 3-pointer from Herbert tied the game 18-18 at the 13:10 mark.  From there, the lead grew to 37-22 on a pair of Brandon Ennis free throws with 7:23 left.

The Firebirds closed the first half on an 18-3 run as Nigel Munson's layup ended the first half to lead 60-35.  UDC shot a blistering 67.6% from the field in the first half hitting 23-of-34 from the floor and 6-of-10 from 3-point range.

In the second half, the lead grew to 32 points with eight minutes left, but the Builders did show a spurt as they chipped away at the deficit knocking it down to 18 points twice with a layup from Isaih Harrison with 30 seconds left giving the final score of 97-79.

Tevin Andrews had a career high 31 points leading the Builders in scoring, rebounds (11) and blocked shots (two).  Harrison added 30 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots.  Those two became the first Builder tandem to score 30 points in a game in the last 10 years.  Harrison hit 14-of-15 from the foul line to tie the single game record for free throws made.  Darrell Fenton was next in scoring with 10 points for the Builders who fell to 10-10 on the year.

Munson paced five in double figures for UDC (7-12) with 24 points and six assists, while Tim Ellison added 18 as five Firebird scored in double figures.

Apprentice School now will not see action until Feb. 12 when they host in-state rival Southern Virginia University in a 6 pm tipoff.
