Second Half Run Leads Builders Over Williamson Trade 64-50

NEWPORT NEWS, VA. – The Apprentice School men's basketball team used a 17-4 run in the final 6:30 to pull away from a pesky Williamson Trade Mechanics squad for a 64-50 win on Sunday in the final game of the Martin Luther King Classic.

Williamson opened the game jumping out to a 10-6 early lead on a Justin Swift stick back with 14:55 left.  Apprentice School responded with a 14-2 run over the next 5:40 as a Johnnie Ferebee 3-point play put the Builders up 20-12 with 9:05 left.  Though the lead eventually grew to 14 as a Tevin Andrews 3-pointer put Apprentice up 32-18 with 4:22 left, the Mechanics clawed slowly back into the game cutting that down to 34-25 on a Marquis Richards layup to close the first half.

In the second half, Apprentice School (13-3) pushed the lead back into double digits as a Darrell Fenton layup off a feed from Isaih Harrison gave the hosts a 41-29 lead with 16:47 left.  Williamson then ripped off a run of their own going the next 6:42 and outscoring the Builders 13-2 as a Reggie Richardson free throw brought them to 43-42 with 10:05 left.

As the teams traded buckets for the next four minutes, a jumper from Debro Curtis kept the Mechanics close for a 47-46 margin with 6:29 remaining.  A 3-pointer from Lance Darden ten seconds later jumpstarted the Builders as they closed the game on a 17-4 flurry to put away the Mechanics.

Harrison was the leading scorer on the night with a double-double of 24 points, 13 rebounds and a team-high five steals.  Ferebee added 13 points while Andrews added another double-double of 11 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.  Williamson was paced by Swift who had 20 points, five rebounds and seven steals.

Apprentice School now hits the road for a pair of games in South Carolina against two NAIA Division I opponents starting with Morris College on Saturday at 2 pm.
