NEWPORT NEWS, VA. – The Jacobsen brothers combined for 50 points as Isaac had 22 to lead four Southern Virginia University Knights in double figures to defeat the Apprentice School 77-73 on Saturday afternoon in a key U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association matchup.

Apprentice School (14-8) jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the first five minutes as a Terrence Palmer capped an 8-0 spurt to lead 10-2 with 14:32 left.  SVU, the defending USCAA National Champions, slowly worked their way into the contest and took its first lead at 24-23 on a pair of Isaac Jacobsen free throws with 7:46 left.  Those free throws were in the midst of a 12-0 SVU run as Ed Greenhalgh hit a pair of free throws with 7:09 left to give the Knights a 28-23 lead.

The Builders answered with a 10-2 run to push the lead back to 33-30 on a pair of Isaih Harrison free throws with 4:10 left.  SVU tied it right back up on a Payton Brooks 3-pointer before each team hit a pair of free throws for the fourth tie of the first half at 34-all as Travis Van Noy hit one of two with 2:10 left.  Apprentice School closed the half on a 7-1 spurt with a Latrone Demiel 3-pointer with 10 seconds left in the half put the Builders up 41-35.

In the second half, the Builders continued their strong close of the half and scored the first seven points to take a 48-35 lead on a Harrison layup with 18:12 left.  The Knights didn't fold and used a pair of Jon Jacobsen 3-pointers to help cut the lead to 53-50 with 13:22 remaining.

The Builders pushed the lead back to nine points on a Tevin Andrews tip-in to lead 61-52 with 9:47 left, but the Knights responded with an 11-0 run to take a 63-61 lead on a Jon Jacobsen jumper with 7:40 left. 

No one held more than a two point led over the next couple minutes before a jumper from Isaac Jacobsen with 5:25 left put the Knights up to stay  at 68-66.  Apprentice School cut it to one on two occasions and had a chance to hold for the last shot to tie, but a turnover and a pair of Payton Brooks free throws ended the game with a 77-73 SVU lead.

Harrison was the leading scorer in the game for the Builders with 26 points and 16 rebounds, while Andrews and Lance Darden added 13 points each.  Andrews also hauled in 10 rebounds, while senior Tim Johnson pulled down 12 rebounds and had three blocked shots.  Following Isaac Jacobsen for SVU was Jon Jacobsen with 17 points, Anders Jacobsen and Brooks with 11 each.

Apprentice School now travels to Washington Adventist University for a 7 pm tip on February 18.
