Men's Basketball Stops Dragons 81-70 In Regular-Season Final Game

NEWPORT NEWS, VA. – Junior Tevin Andrews scored 27 points to lead four in double figures as the Apprentice School closed out its regular season on Sunday with an 81-70 Senior Day win over Virginia University of Lynchburg.

The Builders jumped out strongly racing out to an 11-2 lead on a Lewis Archer jumper with 15:50 left.  VUL responded almost as quickly scoring the next eight points in 90 seconds cutting the lead to 11-10 on a 3-pointer from Dimitry Zimin. 

Apprentice School responded with a 3-pointer from Johnnie Ferebee to go up 14-10 at the 13:54 mark and kept the Dragons at arms length over the next few minutes before a Tevin Andrews jumper with 9:45 left start an 18-8 run over the next 8:10 to take a 40-25 lead on an Andrews layup with 1:35 left.

In the second half, the lead grew to 20 points as Andrews drained a 3-pointer to lead 54-34 with 14:07 left.  VUL had a flurry in the second half cutting the lead down to nine on three occasions late but an Andrews dunk late made the final 81-70.

Joining Andrews in the double figure column was Isaih Harrison with 15 points, eight rebounds and six assists, while Ferebee had 13 points, six assists with no turnovers and senior Tim Johnson had 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds. 

The Builders hit 52.3% from the floor (34-of-65) and were a blistering 19-of-32 (59.4%) in the second half.  They out-rebounded VUL 40-33 as the Dragons were topped by Denuis Gravely with 22 points and Juiss Turja added 15.

Apprentice School will find out early next week if the men will earn a bid to the U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association Division I National Championships on March 7-10 in Uniontown, PA.
