Early Run Sinks Builders In 65-59 Loss To St. Vincent

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA. – Junior Darrell Fenton scored 21 points to lead the Apprentice School on Saturday as they fell to St. Vincent College 65-59 in the consolation game of the Virginia Wesleyan Marlin Tip-off.

The Builders tied the game at 7-all on a Tevin Andrews jumper at the 16:39 mark, but St. Vincent ripped off the next 12 points to lead 19-7 on a JC Howard free throw with 12:28 remaining. Apprentice School cut the lead to 27-24 on a Fenton jumper with 3:40 left, but the Bearcats went on an 11-2 run to close the half to lead 38-26 on an Isaac Turner jumper at the horn.

In the second half, the Builders cut the deficit to four on a couple of occasionswith a Sam Melendez free throw at the 2:35 mark the final time at 59-55.  St. Vincent hit four free throws in the final 28 seconds to keep the Builders at bay.

Andrews was named to the All-Tournament team, while Melendez had a game-high 10 rebounds and Lance Darden scored 10 points for the Builders.

Apprentice School now goes to Elizabeth City, NC for the Viking Thanksgiving Tournament where they open with Claflin (SC) University on Friday night at 6 pm.
