KISSIMMEE, FLA – The Apprentice School tied a school record on Saturday hitting 13 3-pointers and earned a 90-72 win over Trinity College (FL) in the final day of the Florida Christian College Classic.
An 18-4 run late in the first half pushed a 10-point lead to 46-22 with 3:30 left for the Builders as Lance Darden hit a free throw to put the Builders up. Tevin Andrews hit a 3-pointer with 27 seconds left in the half, the tenth of the first half for the Builders, to take a 57-29 lead.
In the second half, the lead grew to 67-38 with 14:41 left as Darden drained a 3-pointer. The Tigers made a run cutting the lead down to 80-67 with 4:14 left on a Jirous Knight 3-pointer. That was as close as they got as a technical foul on the Trinity bench, plus a pair of foul shots made a four-point swing 17 seconds later and the Builders were up 84-67.
Andrews was the leading scorer for the Builders with 21 points and 12 rebounds, while Jay Melendez had 20 points and eight boards. Lavontae Thomas nearly had a double-double with 12 points and eight assists. The 13 3-pointers tied the single-game record set in February of 2006 at now NCAA Division I Florida Gulf Coast University.
Apprentice School (7-4) now visits NCAA Division II Virginia State on Tuesday night for a 7 pm tipoff in Petersburg.
