ETTRICK, VA. -- A hot-shooting Virginia State University Trojans put up 56 points in the second half to pull away from the Apprentice School for an 86-74 win on Tuesday night.
The teams traded the lead five times in the first half as no one held more than a five-point advantage through the first 20 minutes. Apprentice School's Lavontae Thomas hit a layup with 25 seconds left to give the Builders a 33-30 lead heading to halftime.
In the second half, the Trojans went on a 16-4 run over a 4:26 span to take a 60-48 lead on an Allen Harris layup with 11:27 left in the game. Apprentice School cut that in half on a 6-0 spurt as Thomas hit a 3-point play to make the lead 60-54. That was as close as the Builders got as the Trojans shot a blistering 63.6% from the field in the second half (21-of-33) to pull away for the win.
Senior Tevin Andrews scored a game-high 30 points to lead the Builders as Thomas added 19 points and seven assists, while Lance Darden chipped in with 11 points off the bench. Harris topped four in double figures for Virginia State with 21 points.
Apprentice School closes out its road swing on Sunday afternoon with a 2 pm tip against Barber-Scotia College in Concord, NC.
